This bridge carried the Lincoln Highway over the Chicago & Northwestern Railway tracks in Mount Vernon. The photo was taken from the bridge that carries the historic version of the highway now.
The narrow lane was the Lincoln Highway for many years. The bricks are original paving and this block is one of only a handful of places in the country where original Lincoln Highway brick paving is extant.
This bridge was closed in 1996. The UPRR (UP acquired the C&NW in 1995) wanted the bridge torn down, because for many years, students of nearby Cornell College were accused of throwing rocks at passing trains. The bridge was renovated over 1997-1998.
This kiosk was built to inform visitors of the significance of the bridge. Just beyond the brick street behind the kiosk is the football stadium for Cornell College.
