Description
This bridge is in remarkable condition for having been abandoned since the late 1960's when US 27 was re-routed and turned into a 4 lane highway. As can be seen from the photos, it has numerous trees and other growth growing on top of it, but the understructure seems to be fully intact and it should be there for quite a few years to come.
There is a powerline or pipeline trail that runs just to the East of the current routing of US 27. I came in from that direction and then parked the Jeep and hiked to it. It is well hidden back in the woods but can occasionally be spotted from the Northbound bridge of the current US27. You can just barely see the old routing of old US27 as it leads off into the woods.

It appears to be a Luten arch bridge in fact one directly associated with Daniel Luten based on the detail at the corners of the arch rib. Refer to Jim Cooper's book about Indiana's concrete bridges for details about Luten arches.
