Description
This bridge is one of the most fascinating swing bridges I've ever seen--it's a pony truss that appears to be of a design similar to a Howe truss, with V-lacing everywhere, including on the verticals and the upper and lower chords. The steel grid deck is mounted in such a way that it almost looks like a deck truss from a distance, and the approaches are concrete slab spans. The bridge is manually opened by inserting a steel rod into an attachment in the deck, right in the center of the bridge's main span. The structure is a one-lane bridge that carries traffic onto Torry Island, a major boat landing area for Lake Okeechobee.
