Description

This bridge and the rest of the causeway was built over a span of six years from 1952 to 1958. It replaced a ferry as the only means to and from Gasparilla Island. In 1983 the bridge was sold to a private entity that pledged to maintain and operate. A series of mishaps in the early 1990s convinced island residents that a board authority was needed. Since 1998 the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority has managed and maintained the bridge. Currently there is much debate on the future of this bridge and a $40 million plan to replace. When board elections were announced 16 candidates declared that they were running for office something of a rarity.
