Rises in Hamilton County, Iowa northeast of Stradford, Iowa, flows through Boone county, and finally confluences into the (South) Skunk River in Ames, Iowa.

Originally named "Squaw Creek", it has been re-named Ioway Creek by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
