The US Army Corps of Engineers built and operated a Lock and Dam system on the Green River and Barren River in Kentucky. The primary function of this system was for transport of Kentucky Western Coal from the mines to the Ohio River system. The Green River was navigable to Brownsville KY, just downstream from Mammoth Cave National Park; the Barren River was navigable to Bowling Green KY
