Flint Hills Nature Trail
View Exhibit map
The Flint Hills Nature Trail is a rail-to-trail conversion of the former Missouri Pacific (later Union Pacific 1982-1996) Osawatomie to Herington, KS main line. From Herington, the line extends west to Pueblo, Colorado but is not part of the trail at this time. This was a secondary line for UP and saw very little traffic from 1982-95, except during the 1993 flood when traffic was detoured to it heavily until the water receded on other lines. Removal began in places around 1995 and was finished by early '97. UP has rail banked this line for 50 years and has until 2045 to reactivate it for use until full abandonment is installed. For now, a "land use" has been granted to the Kanza Rail Trail conservation to use it for a hiking/bike trail.
