Formerly named Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff, this company began under the name Harrington, Howard & Ash in 1914 specializing in the design of moveable bridges as well as railroad bridges. In 1941 it changed its name bacl to Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff. Another associated name was Ash, Howard, Needles, and Tammen. Many historic bridges were designed by this firm under any of these former names. However the HNTB name of today is associated with demolition and replacement of historic bridges, with the company being one of the leading designers of large modern bridges, particularly cable-stayed bridges.
