Whittier Boulevard Rio Hondo Bridge

Whittier Blvd. Bridge over the Rio Hondo in Montebello

This a view of the bridge looking south-west from the Rio Hondo levy. The open channel below is not the Rio Hondo but a storm water conveyance to spreading grounds. Historically, the Rio Hondo was much wider which is why the bridge is much wider. When the river was channelized, they kept this portion open for flood control and ground water re-charge purposes. So this was once the Rio Hondo but no more.
